Pigeons - rats of the air?

NO!

Pigeons are very intelligent birds that can even recognize human faces.

Today's city pigeons are descended from the rock pigeon, which man has bred for hobby but also as a meat supplier.

Thousands of pigeons are still being sent on races, some of which cannot find their way back and are forced to join the city pigeons.

The cultivated breeding instinct leads to the fact that they 4 to 8 times! lay eggs per year. So this multiplication is a problem that we humans have created. The rearing of the chicks and the hard life requires an immense effort, which unfortunately not all survive.

We let them down

With spikes, nets, spikes on ledges and roofs, we poison and kick, we drive away the territorial birds.

Pigeons are either loved or hated. But she didn't deserve the hate. Even if you don't like them, you should respect them as a creature like a dog, whale or human!

Don't the pigeons prick all day?

That's true, but they often prick breadcrumbs, cake scraps, or waffle crumbs. That's not good for the pigeons. They need about 40 g of grains a day, such as poppy seeds, wheat, rye, millet, etc., as they are pure grain eaters. In the cities, surrounded by concrete and steel, they find no grain, so they hungrily eat whatever comes into their beaks. The fact that pizza, fries and the like is not species-appropriate food can be seen from the so-called "hunger droppings" - which they excrete in large liquid blobs. With healthy feeding, the piles are small and firm.

Contrary to popular belief, pigeon droppings do not attack stony surfaces at all (Test report from the Technical University of Darmstadt, 2004), slight corrosion can only occur with metals.

How to help the pigeons:

  • Don't be afraid of diseases

The health risk of city pigeons is no greater than that of other wild animals such as blackbirds, mice and ornamental birds, which has been scientifically proven!

  • Don't torment or annoy

Would you like to be shooed or kicked? So the pigeons don't want it. Their life is hard enough, from foraging to raising the chicks. They therefore need a lot of strength and energy, we shouldn't make life even more difficult for them!

  • Don't look away - look

Do you see a pigeon that does not fly away, or is even injured? Call us, write to us or contact animal welfare. We then look after the animal and try our best to help the pigeon!
